We take our place in society and on this planet seriously and want to do more to help.
There’s a planet emergency yet only 3% of philanthropic giving globally goes directly to supporting what ultimately supports us, the environment.
1% for the Planet was set up to change this and help hold businesses to their pledge giving at least 1% of all money they receive to verified planet looking after charities. To be a member means you not only pledge to do this but 1% for the Planet audit your accounts and giving receipts to make sure no green washing is going on.
We’re really happy to be doing this and have after careful consideration about maximum impact and a chat with my shark obsessed daughter decided that the 2 charities we will initially split our money between are ocean based.
Largely cleaning up the ocean and helping protect and restore blue carbon stores, that are far better and quicker at soaking up carbon than rainforests.
Blue carbon is mostly mangrove and seagrass, the charities which not only help the planet but also give local jobs to the communities largely around Asia where the initiative take place.
It’s all very well us wanting to restore blue carbon reserves but they are often not there due to fisheries and tourism, which mostly richer countries benefit from so there also needs to be more sustainable businesses for locals so they don’t suffer as a result of us.
They’ll be more plastic in the oceans than fish by 2050 is we don’t do something about it.
We don’t consider being a member of 1% for the Planet as a ‘nice to have’ but a much needed cost for doing business in a finite world.
